2-Panel Interior Doors

A two-panel door has exactly what the name says: two recessed panels, stacked, in a clean rectangular layout. It’s the style most new construction and remodels default to right now — simple enough to read as modern, traditional enough not to date badly.

We stock it in two faces, solid and hollow core, prehung or as a slab.

The two we carry

Two-Panel Shaker — Solid Wood Core
Square-edged, flat recessed panels. The sharper, more architectural of the two. Solid wood core, so it has real weight and noticeably cuts sound between rooms. This is the one most people mean when they search “2 panel shaker door.”

Two-Panel Smooth Carrara — Hollow Core
Softer, slightly rounded panel profile and a perfectly smooth face that takes paint cleanly. Hollow core, so it’s lighter and more economical — a good call for closets and secondary rooms, or for a whole house on a tighter budget.

Both come primed and ready to paint.

Shaker or smooth — which one?

Shaker (solid core) Smooth Carrara (hollow core)
Panel edge Square, crisp Softly profiled
Core Solid wood Hollow
Sound Blocks noticeably more Passes more through
Weight Heavy, solid feel Light
Best for Bedrooms, baths, offices Closets, secondary rooms
Cost Higher Lower

A common split on a whole house: shaker solid core on bedrooms and bathrooms, smooth hollow core on closets. You get the sound control where it matters without paying for it on a linen closet.

Sizes

Widths from 1’0″ to 3’0″ in 2″ increments — 2’6″ (30″) and 2’8″ (32″) are the usual bedroom and bathroom sizes, 2’2″ (26″) and 2’4″ (28″) for older homes and baths.

Heights: 6’8″ (80″) standard, plus 7’0″, 8’0″ and 9’0″ for taller openings.

Double-door configurations run from 2’0″ to 6’0″ overall.

Prehung or slab?

Prehung means the door arrives already mounted in its frame — you set the whole unit into the opening. Choose this if the frame is damaged, out of square, or doesn’t exist yet.

Slab is the door panel alone, for when your existing frame is solid and you’re only replacing the door.

Jamb depths available: 4-9/16″, 4-7/8″, and 6-9/16″. More on prehung doors →

FAQ

What is a 2-panel interior door?
A door with two recessed rectangular panels in its face, usually stacked vertically. It’s the most common style in current new construction.

Is a 2-panel door the same as a shaker door?
Not quite. “Shaker” describes the panel profile — square, flat, unornamented. A shaker door can have one, two or three panels. A 2-panel shaker has both.

Are 2-panel doors solid or hollow core?
Both are available. Solid core is heavier and blocks more sound; hollow core is lighter and cheaper.

Can I get a 2-panel door prehung?
Yes — both styles come prehung with the frame, or as a slab on its own.

Do they come painted?
Primed, not finish-painted. You paint your color after installation.
